Sky Wrong to Use Virgin Comparison in Ads Says Ofcom

Sky Wrong to Use Virgin Comparison in Ads Says Ofcom

The Office of Communications (Ofcom) has ruled that Sky has violated the broadcasting code when it made on screen promotions regarding its carriage dispute with Virgin Media.

The issue relates to promotions that Sky made during last year near the time Sky’s basic channel package was about to be removed from Virgin’s digital media service.

The dispute first came out in public in February last year when Sky went on to broadcast a text on its basic channels that urged its viewers to call up Virgin as they were soon going to miss the chance of viewing Sky’s channels along with their favourite shows.

The next phase of promotions initiated by Sky in March last year on its digital satellite service reassured it customers by mentioning "You may have heard that Virgin Media customers no longer receive some of the Sky channels. But don’t worry, as a Sky customer you’ll still be able to watch all your favourite programmes."

Ofcom has ruled that some of Sky’s actions violated it cross promotion code along with other sections of its broadcasting code which relates to giving undue prominence to a product or service.
