Apple announced on Thursday that all four of the major networks - ABC, Fox, NBC and CBS - would offer their high-definition (HD) TV shows on its iTunes application and claimed that it had sold around 1million TV episodes since the format was introduced last month.
There are a total of 70 prime-time shows available on Apple’s iTunes and the new additions include Bones and Prison Break from Fox, CSI and CSI: Miami airing on CBS, Lost and Grey’s Anatomy from ABC, and The Office from NBC.
Apple has sold over 200 million HD TV episodes in three years on iTunes at standard rates of USD1.99 for TV episodes, and USD2.99 for HD programs.
According to an analyst firm In-Stat, the online video market would jump to a whopping USD4.5 billion from USD1.2 billion this year, and companies offering services at flat monthly charge are likely to eventually lead the market.
In a statement, Apple’s VP of Internet Services, Eddy Cue said, “With over 200 million episodes sold, iTunes customers have proven they love watching television on their computer, iPod, iPhone, and TV with Apple TV.”
