T-Mobile Executives must be happy as it looks likely that the gamble it took with the HTC G1 Android smartphone bears its fruits; 1.5 million US-based customers have apparently pre-ordered the G1 Android phone which is due to be released on the 22nd of October.
According to Fool.com, the figures do not include retail sales and is an incredible leap of faith for hundreds of thousands who believe in what Google (mostly) promised them.
No one has corroborated the Fool.com's report but it is interested that ranking website Alexa's reporting that traffic to the G1 Site (T-mobileg1.com) has been fairly constant in the last few days.
Interestingly, Apple took 75 days to sell their first million iPhones (but only three days for the iPhone 3G) and the German operator has apparently grossly underestimated the popularity of the phone, having ordered only 500,000 G1 Android phones.
Let's cross fingers that they won't commit the same mistakes as Apple did with the first iPhone launch; if things turn out right, T-Mobile, Google and HTC could have a best-seller on their hands while Apple, RIM and Nokia could have a massive headache for the forthcoming Christmas period.
