Trend Micro sells antivirus applications and it is understandable that the outfit was miffed when Barracuda Networks started to bundle the freely available Sourcefire ClamAV application with its products.
It is a bit like Microsoft suing IBM because the latter is giving away Open Source'd Lotus Symphony Office suite with its servers.
Barracuda has called upon the open source community to fight along its side against Trend Micro.
TrendMicro, which Matt Asay from NewsBlog likens to a larger-than-life Patent Troll, is also attacking Panda software for alleged patent infringement.
Justin Mason, vice president of the Apache Software Foundation, noted that Trend Micro looks to jeopardise the legitimacy of open and free open source software using th so-called '600 patent which deals with Gateway Antivirus Scanning, which Barracuda Networks say is "an obvious and common technique utilized by most businesses worldwide".
Barracuda Networks warns that the outcome of the litigations could mean that millions could potentially be sued by Trend Micro.
